The Ancient Roman Bullseye Agate Hippocampus Intaglio Signet Ring
Couldn't load pickup availability
This stunning ring holds a beautiful ancient Roman intaglio at its heart, featuring an inset carving of a hippocampus. In Roman symbolism, a hippocampus represented Neptune's power over the sea and likely served as a protective emblem for safe travel or protection from nature's forces. The hippocampus is carved into a bulleye agate, showing black, white, and orangish-brown layers.
The stone is in a rose gold setting, leading to a rose gold band. The intaglio, though Roman, was set into the piece in the 19th century.
Provenance: Acquired at public auction from a reputable fine-art and antiques auction house (London, UK). Previously in a private collection.
