Engagement Rings

Antique and vintage engagement rings spanning every major era of British jewellery — Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, and mid-century — alongside coloured gemstone alternatives to the traditional diamond solitaire. This collection includes the full range of period styles: from diamond clusters and five-stone rings to toi et moi designs and single-stone settings in hand-wrought mounts.

Antique engagement rings differ fundamentally from modern production in how they were made. Diamonds were hand-cut on foot-powered laps, producing the old mine cuts, old European cuts, and rose cuts whose larger facets and higher crowns create a warmer, softer sparkle than modern brilliants. Settings were individually shaped — hand-carved collets, hand-applied milgrain, pierced galleries filed to shape — so no two rings are identical. Coloured gemstones were historically as popular as diamonds for engagement: sapphires for loyalty, rubies for passion, and emeralds for enduring love all have centuries of precedent predating the twentieth-century diamond convention.

Every ring is authenticated through hallmarks, construction analysis, and provenance documentation. Sizing is straightforward for most designs — plain bands resize comfortably within one to two sizes, while stone-set rings may have more limited options depending on the setting style. Sapphires and rubies (Mohs 9) are well suited to daily wear, while softer stones like opals and pearls are better reserved for occasional use.
