The Antique Georgian Gilt Pearl & Pineapple Ring
Sold April 2023
This ring's seven natural pearls are held in patterned settings that join to a scroll carved shank featuring a pineapple on each side.
Circa 1820, this ring tests as 9ct. The band is in good overall condition for its age. The gilding is worn a little with time but the ring is still notably golden in colour. The pearls show some signs of wear to the nacre consistent with age.
Though it may seem strange to us today, the pineapple was a symbol of high status in Georgian Britain. Christopher Columbus found pineapples in the Caribbean in 1493, and they became a rare delicacy in Europe, associated with power, wealth, and hospitality. In Britain, the practice of bringing pineapples to the dining table was not just for the aristocracy but extended to the gentry. When visiting stately homes you may see the pineapple features in woodwork on banisters and the like.
