The Antique Victorian Onyx Cameo Mourning Ring
Sold September 2023
This ring features an onyx stone with a forget-me-not flower motif delicately sculpted. The shoulders have an intricate line pattern carved into them, framing the central stone wonderfully. The band would have originally held a panel of plaited hair in the band, hence the channel which travels entirely around the outside of the band.
This ring, circa 1880, tests as 9ct. It is in good overall condition, still well rounded and the onyx is well held. The blue flower has a chip to one of its petals, and as previously mentioned the hair is no longer present.
Mourning jewellery was a popular tradition in Victorian times, and people often chose to remember their loved ones through trinkets and jewellery. When a loved one passed away, they cut off snippets of their hair to be preserved in rings, pendants, or alongside photographs.
