The Antique Gothic Victorian 1897 Pearl Mourning Ring

This magnificent antique Victorian mourning ring holds five pearls in a floral shaped black enamel motif, and a diamond sits directly in the centre. Clasping the ring’s head, the shoulders are incredibly detailed in an ornate fashion, giving the ring a dramatic and elegant gothic look.

Concealed in the ring’s back, there lies a tiny piece of hair sealed with glass. We can assume that this ring was once held close to someone’s heart, as they have decided to memorialise a piece of their loved one’s remains forever.

Victorian mourning rings were a popular tradition of the time. They acted as a comfort when in the mourning period, a lock of their beloved one’s hair was a popular choice when memorializing the dead.

One of the pearls has slight nacre wear, however, the ring is in good condition overall, and it has been fully hallmarked by the Assay Office of Birmingham for 18ct gold in 1897.
