The Ancient Wearable Roman Legionary Gift To Hercules Ring
Sold April 2021
Circa 100-300 AD, this ancient Roman silver legionary ring carries the inscription 'VOT HER', an abbreviation which means 'a gift to Hercules', an inscription seen on the rings of Roman Legionary.
During the Roman period Hercules was venerated as a divinized hero and incorporated into the legends of Rome's founding. The Roman legionary (in Latin legionarius, plural legionarii) was a professional heavy infantryman of the Roman army after the Marian reforms. These soldiers would conquer and defend the territories of the Roman Empire during the late Republic and Principate eras, alongside auxiliary and cavalry detachments. At its height, Roman legionaries were viewed as the foremost fighting force in the Roman world, with commentators such as Vegetius praising their fighting effectiveness centuries after the classical Roman legionary disappeared.
