The Ancient Post-Medieval 'Die To Live' Memento Mori Skull Ring
Sold July 2022
This silver memento mori ring, circa 1700 to 1900 AD, features a skull encircled by the phrase "Die To Live".
Memento Mori rings were a medieval tradition designed to remind the wearer of the preciousness of life. Often given or made after a death, these rings ask you to reflect upon your life for a moment and 'remember you will die', sometimes with that phrase in Latin, 'memento mori', on the ring. This tradition continued for centuries, eventually losing fashionable popularity in the Victorian era and being replaced with mourning rings.
