The Georgian 19th Century Susanna Garfield of Hastings Portrait Ring

Sold for £999.00

A portrait ring presenting Susanna Garfield of Hastings, born 1785. The ring's inside is engraved in her memory and would have likely been worn by her mother.

Hastings, most famously known for The Battle Of Hastings in 1066, now boasts a population of over 92,000 people but in 1801 when this ring was made the town had just 3,175 people. From the image in the ring we can see Susanna was from a wealthy family with an eye for fashions of the time.

Remembrance jewellery is often associated with the Victorian Era, but portrait jewellery has been an English tradition since at least the 14th Century. This Georgian piece is a lovely example of how we can keep those we treasure near to our hearts.

At around 220 years old, this ring is in good condition with wear in keeping with age. A laser repair has been performed to one section where the frame joins the band. This ring is wearable.

This ring includes printed scans from the records of All Saints Church, Hastings, Sussex for

  • The birth of Susanna Hastings, 10th June 1785
  • The burial of Susanna Hastings, 24th December 1801
  • The burial of Robert Hastings (father), 1811
  • The burial of Susanna Hastings (mother), 1823

This ring's band measures Size P but is thick. Thicker bands mean a ring sits well on a wider range below its size. This ring would likely best fit a Size N / Size O finger.

Important notes: Due to the age and style of this ring, it is excluded from our Resizing Service. The portrait inside is presumed to be painted on ivory. Whether that is walrus or some other kind is not known so in line with legal requirements this ring is declared and registered under 'Portrait miniature made before 1918 with a surface area less than 320 square centimetres' with the UK Government. It is not available for sale to international customers.
